Barun Glacial Lake Monitoring

About the Barun Glacial Lake

Barun Lake, located in eastern Nepal at 87°04'52.60"E and 27°50'38.59"N, has shown moderate expansion between 1992 and 2024. In 1992, the lake covered an area of approximately 0.313 km², while by 2024 its surface area had increased to about 0.382 km². Although the change is not as dramatic as in some rapidly growing glacial lakes of the Himalaya, this steady enlargement still reflects the influence of ongoing glacier melt and climatic variability in the region. The expansion of Barun Lake highlights the gradual but persistent response of high-altitude water bodies to warming conditions, which can have implications for local hydrology, ecosystems, and potential downstream risks.
