Lower Barun Glacial Lake is located in eastern Nepal at 27°47′N latitude and 87°05′E longitude at an altitude of 4550 meter. It is located southeast of Imja Glacial Lake in the upper reach of the Barun River and adjacent to the mountain range of Mount Makalu. The lake is formed by the melting of the Lower Barun Glacier, which flows directly into the lake. The lake is naturally contained by a large moraine, a dam-like ridge of glacial debris and rock. The lake's water feeds into the Barun River, which flows through a popular trekking route to Makalu Base Camp. Due to its location and the potential for a catastrophic flood, the lake is under continuous observation to ensure the safety of trekkers and local communities downstream.
